FAQ's

1

Who do you work with?

I work with adults and young people aged 16–18, of all genders and backgrounds.

You can come with a particular difficulty or because something doesn’t feel right and you’d like help understanding it.

2

Do my problems need to be ā€œbad enoughā€?

You don’t need to reach a breaking point before talking to someone.

If something is affecting you, taking up space in your head or making life harder, we can talk about whether therapy might help.

3

What happens during the free 30-minute chat?

It’s a chance to meet me, ask questions and talk a little about what you’re looking for.

We’ll discuss availability, fees and how I work. You don’t need to tell your whole story, and there’s no commitment to book afterwards.

4

What if I don’t know what to say?

You can tell me that. We’ll start there.

You don’t need a prepared explanation or a list of things to discuss. I’ll ask questions and help us find a starting point.

5

How long are sessions, and what do they cost?

Sessions last 50 minutes.

My fee is Ā£40–£60 per session, on a sliding scale. You choose an amount within that range that feels affordable for you.

There’s no expectation to pay the full Ā£60.

We’ll agree your fee before starting.

6

Where do sessions take place?

I offer in-person sessions at Edwinstowe House in Edwinstowe and Gothic House in Nottingham.

Online sessions are also available.

Ā

You’ll need a suitable device, a reliable internet connection and somewhere private to talk.

See the Sessions & Fees page for the room addresses and further details.

7

How often would we meet, and how many sessions would I need?

We’ll agree on how often to meet and a regular day and time before starting.

The number of sessions will depend on what you’re looking for and how the work develops.

Ā

We’ll review how you’re finding therapy and talk about continuing or bringing it to an end.

8

How do I pay?

Payment is by bank transfer within 24 hours of each session, unless we agree otherwise.

I’ll provide the payment details before we begin.

9

What if I need to cancel or rearrange?

Please get in touch as soon as you can.

We’ll discuss the required notice period and any charges for late cancellations or missed appointments before starting.

Ā

These arrangements will be set out in our working agreement.

10

Is what I say confidential?

Your sessions are confidential, within the limits explained before we start.

Those limits include safeguarding responsibilities, protecting people from harm and situations where information must be shared by law.

Ā

I also discuss my work in confidential professional supervision, using as little identifying information as possible.

Where it’s safe and possible, I’ll discuss any necessary sharing with you beforehand.

Ā

Sometimes urgent action or safety concerns may mean I need to act without speaking to you first.

11

I’m 16 or 17. Do I need parental permission?

You can usually consent to therapy yourself if you can understand what’s involved and make that decision.

We’ll discuss consent and whether involving a parent, carer or another trusted adult would be appropriate in your circumstances.

At 18, you consent to therapy as an adult. You can read more about this on the Therapy for Teens page.

12

Can I enquire on behalf of a teenager?

Yes. Parents and carers are welcome to ask about therapy for someone aged 16–18.

We’ll discuss the practical arrangements and give the young person an opportunity to meet me and ask their own questions. Their willingness to take part matters.

13

If I pay for my teenager’s sessions, will I receive updates?

Paying for or arranging therapy doesn’t automatically give you access to what is discussed.

Before we begin, we’ll agree on how contact with parents or carers will work.

Ā

We'll respect the young person’s privacy while meeting my safeguarding and legal responsibilities.

14

What if I need urgent help?

The Talking Cave isn’t a crisis service, and messages aren’t monitored continuously.

For urgent mental health support, visit the NHS urgent help page.

For an immediate emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.
